TBILISI—Pursuant to the amnesty law which the Georgian parliament recently passed, Armenian political prisoners Armen Gevorgyan and Ruben Shekoyan were released from prison on Sunday.
Both are Adjara Armenian community activists, and they were arrested in October 2010 and sentenced to eleven years, but without any sound evidence against them.
The former political prisoners went to Holy Etchmiadzin Armenian Church in Tbilisi, where they were welcomed by Bishop Vazgen Mirzakhanian, Primate of the Georgian Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, the diocese’s press service informed. Bishop Mirzakhanian highly appreciated the fair and humane manifestations of Georgia’s new authorities and congratulated Gevorgyan and Shekoyan on their release.
The case of Vahan Chakhalyan, an imprisoned Georgian-Armenian activist whose name has been removed from the list of about 190 prisoners recognized as political prisoners and amnestied in Georgia last weekend, will not undergo any essential changes
