YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–As a result of investigations and research conducted at the Institute of Applied Physical Problems at the Armenian National Academy of Sciences–a new lamp has been designed. Speaking at a meeting of the Academy’s Presidium–Director of the Institute–Academician Alpik Mkrtichian said that the lamp is a design of the 21st century and at present there are no similar items on the international market.
Mkrtichian pointed out that the principles of plasma lighting has been known for a long time. As inexpensive electric components appeared–new electronic circuits were developed which allowed for high quality light to be achieved. The well-known firms–Philips of the Netherlands and General Electric of the USA became leaders in this sphere. The lamps developed by these firms are quite expensive.
The newly developed lamp is based on a new idea: the interaction of plasma with an acoustic field which originates inside it under certain conditions. According to Academician Mkrtichian–the physics of this phenomenon requires further investigation. However–the experimen’s showed that this interaction can be used in the development of a lamp with improved parameters.
Mkrtichian showed four samples of lamps of different capacities (6-12 watts). With less power used the lamps emitted brighter light than a similar 15-watt lamp produced by the Philips firm and a 100-watt filament lamp.
Among the advantages of the new lamp are not only its efficiency but also simplified technology of its production. The tests showed that the lamp does not blow even if the oscillations of the alternating current reach 20 percent.
According to Mkrtichian–the Institute started developing the third crop of lamps in which chips are used as electronic circuits.
The new lamp has already been patented.
