The Armenia office of the International Foundation for Election Systems (IFES) in its Tuesday meeting discussed difficulties incurred during recent local government elections–and methods to eliminate difficulties on the eve of upcoming national polls. Participants also considered measures to ensure fair and transparent presidential elections.
During local elections–the IFES formed consulting commissions to review electoral lists (CCEL) in eight regions of Armenia–including Aragatsotn–Armavir and Lori–to assist in correcting voter list errors.
"We should state that the CCEL’s did a great job. Over 33,000 corrections were made to electoral lists allowing electors to vote with no further complications," stated Anatoly Zabalotny–the head of the IFES Armenia training office–and revealed that he considered the work already undertaken by the commission as quite efficient.
The organization plans to draw on previous experiences to ensure proper running of presidential election scheduled for February 19,2003.
