YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan). In addressing Thursday’s meeting held in commemoration of the world-famed scientist Viktor Hambartsumian–who would be 90 today–President of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia–Fadei Sargssian–called Hambartsumian a great Armenian.
The contribution of Viktor Hambartsumian to the establishment and development of science in Armenia–when he headed the Academy of Sciences of Armenia for over 46 years–was especially stressed. Due to him–said Sargssian–the Academy of Sciences enriched the science with classical achievemen’s.
Viktor Hambartsumian was elected member of the 24 largest academies of the world–was awarded the highest scientific prizes – the Lomonosov and Vavilov Gold Medals; gold medals of academies if the USA–Germany–France–Argentina and other countries.
The discoveries of Hambartsumian that served the basis for the appearance of quite a number of scientific trends: the discovery of constellations (which served the basis for the solution of a number of fundamental problems of (star cosmogony)–the study of active galaxies and many others.
Viktor Hambartsumian was known as an active advocate of national interests–especially in the period before the Karabakh movement.
Also speaking were head of the National Assembly of Armenia Khosrov Haroutiunian–Archbishop Nerses Pozapalian–Rector of Yerevan State University–academician Radik Martirossian–Professor of Venise University–Armen’st Levon Zekiyan–Academician David Sedrakian and others.
A bust to Viktor Hambartsumian by Ferdinand Arakelian was inaugurated at the building of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia on the occasion of the 90th birthday anniversary of the great scientist. Memorial boards by architects Iza Cholakhian and Jim Torosian have been put up at the Biurakan Observatory and before the house where Viktor Hambartsumian lived and worked. The scientist’s museum was also opened in Biurakan.
