GLENDALE—This Halloween, in addition to a request for candy, community members young and old, will be asking their neighbors to commit to vote on November 6th through the Hye Votes Trick or Vote Campaign. The event, scheduled to take place on Wednesday, October 31, 2012, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at 211 W. Chestnut St., 3rd Floor, Glendale, CA 91204 is part of the nation’s largest get out the vote effort in costume. Similar events are planned in 41 states, offering voters a Halloween mix of costume parties and community service.
“With Election Day only a week away, the Trick or Vote Campaign is yet another way the Hye Votes team plans to inform thousands of voters about the upcoming elections,” stated Hye Votes Campaign Director, Elen Asatryan. “We are very excited about our partnership with Trick or Vote and look forward to a fun-filled Halloween,” added Asatryan.

The event is connected to a national movement that aims to increase civic engagement by making democracy more fun and approachable. The idea for large Trick or Vote events emerged after a study came out of Yale University years ago that showed knocking on doors can increase voter turnout by 8-12%. With many Americans already celebrating Halloween by going door-to-door shortly before the election, civics advocates saw an opportunity.
The Hye Votes Campaign was launched by the Armenian National Committee of America-Western Region in 2012, as a region wide, non-partisan initiative to engage community members in the electoral process. The Hye Votes efforts in coalition with a network of non-profit organizations, student groups, and community members, are intended to register and encourage the community to vote in the November 6th General Elections while also serving as a source for voter information.
