On May 19, the Armenian community lost an ardent activist and committed supporter of the Armenian Cause when Satig Der Ohanessian passed away unexpectedly, leaving a void not only for her family but the countless causes and organizations she supported throughout her life.
With Satig Der Ohanessian’s passing, Asbarez also lost one of its most avid readers and dedicated supporters, who throughout the years elevated our newspaper with her in-depth discourse and discussion about the topics our publication covered, always encouraging us to continue featuring varied opinions that expressed different points of view.
Over the years, Satig Der Ohanessian and her husband, Meher, not only have been engaged readers but also generous supporters of Asbarez and the 113-year-old mission of our newspaper.
So, it was bittersweet, as well as an honor, when Meher Der Ohanessian contacted me last week to say that to honor Satig’s request and wish, he was donating $10,000 to Asbarez and thanked the newspaper for its unwavering commitment in advancing our national aspirations.
We will miss Satig Der Ohanessian, but will always have the lessons from her dedication and commitment to advancing our community through her activism, advocacy and unwavering encouragement.
At the same time, we are humbled and grateful for this generous gesture and would like to thank Meher and the Der Ohanessian family for their ongoing support of Asbarez.
