The California Armenian Legislative Caucus Foundation organized an Educational Tour on September 27 to spotlight the achievements of Armenian schools in Southern California. The event drew a distinguished group of legislators and several local elected remarkable officials, all coming together to celebrate the vital role of Armenian educational institutions in California’s educational landscape.
Legislators in attendance included Senators Bob Archuleta, Maria Elena Durazo, Anthony Portantino, Assemblymembers Laura Friedman and Tri Ta, as well as former Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian.
The day began with a traditional Armenian welcome at Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School in Hollywood, setting a vibrant tone with music and dance performances. In true Armenian custom, guests were greeted with a platter of salt, water, and bread, symbolizing hospitality and unity.
The delegation then moved to the Tashdjian Gymnasium, where Pilibos Middle School students highlighted Armenian culture with song and dance performances. Following the cultural showcase, legislators and local officials engaged in meaningful conversations with the school’s administration and Board of Directors.
Principal Dr. Souzy Ohanian, joined by Board Member Gary Daghlian, welcomed the Armenian Caucus members and touched on Pilibos’ academic achievements, highlighting the success of its students and alumni. Pilibos, a pillar of academic excellence, continues to be a source of pride for the Armenian community, with its graduates contributing significantly to various professional fields.
“It is a privilege to tour Rose and Alex Pilibos School alongside my colleagues from the California Legislature,” stated Senator Durazo, who represents the 26th Senate District, including Little Armenia. “I have always been impressed by how the Armenian community collaborates to support its private schools, achieving an impressive 90 percent college acceptance rate for students!”
The tour continued to Vahan and Anoush Chamlian Armenian School in Glendale, where Head of School Dr. Talin Kargodorian and student representatives warmly welcomed the guests. The tour offered a unique glimpse into the daily life of a Chamlian student, with officials observing classroom instruction, playtime, gardening, and even dance classes.
A particular highlight was the STEM-focused activities in the library and technology room, demonstrating the school’s commitment to innovative and future-focused learning. Throughout the tour, student body representatives enthusiastically shared insights into the curriculum and cultural experiences that define Chamlian’s educational approach.
“Having five kids, I know the best gift a parent can give their children is a quality education,” said Senator Archuleta, who represents California Senate District 32. “Seeing the dedication the students had for their studies and the passion they have in promoting Armenian culture and history was inspiring. I want to thank the Rose and Alex Pilibos and Vahan and Anoush Chamlian Armenian Schools for giving our delegation the opportunity to tour their campuses and meet the future leaders of the Armenian community.”
The day concluded with a luncheon at Carousel, where staff, legislators, and school administrators came together for a thoughtful discussion on the importance of education, higher learning, and community empowerment. The conversations underscored the crucial role that Armenian educational institutions play in shaping future generations of leaders and professionals.
“I had a great time attending The California Armenian Legislative Caucus Foundation’s tour. I was deeply impressed by the commitment and innovation these schools demonstrate in enriching our community,” said Assemblymember Ta, representing the 70th Assembly District. “Their dedication to fostering a positive learning environment is a testament to the bright future we’re building together.”
Pattyl Aposhian Kasparian, a Board member of the Western Prelacy Armenian Schools, reflected on the significance of the day: “On behalf of the Board of Regents of Western Prelacy Armenian Schools, we are grateful to The California Armenian Legislative Caucus Foundation and our elected officials for organizing this event to highlight the accomplishments and success of our Armenian educational institutions. As our schools celebrate decades of educational success in Southern California, we take pride in our students who have advanced in their academic and professional lives and work to serve the betterment of our community and society.”
“I was honored to join the California Armenian Legislative Caucus for a tour of our district’s amazing Armenian schools,” said Assemblymember Friedman (D-Burbank). “These culturally-rich schools offer advanced language classes, music, art, and STEM classes. It was so impressive to see the students’ deep cultural knowledge, but also their empathy and self-confidence. These global citizens are truly the future leaders of tomorrow.”
