YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Parliamentarian Irakly Batiashvili–who headed Georgia’s security service in 1992-1993–said that he possessed data "on the arms supplies to Armenia from the Group of Russian Force to Transcaucasus (GRFT)."
According to Batiashvili–a party of 120mm mortars was supplied via the Georgian-Armenian border in recent times–and similar shipmen’s are being carried out systematically.
According to him–Georgia’s Defense Minister Vardiko Nadibaidze is informed about the facts and he himself ordered to let go the column of Russian military technique stopped by Georgian forces at the border. The Moscow Segodnya writes that the Georgian Security Council started investigation on the fact.
Batiashvili’s information was confirmed by Head of Georgian parliament’s committee for defense and national security Revaz Adania. However–according to him–the column with Russian military technique was not let in Armenia. As he said–the column was carrying mines and not mortars. Revaz Adania also said that Georgian security forces had many times curbed attempts of arms supply to Armenia. He added that the Georgian side is currently compiling a list of arms and property belonging to Transcaucasian Military District (TMD) in 1991–in order to compare with the property retained at depositories of GRFT today. In case of difference–Russia is going to recoup the damage–because the property of the former TMD was declared as Georgia’s property.
Commenting on deputy’s statemen’s–Georgian Defense Ministry’s press center reported that the accusations are groundless.
