YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The parliament standing commission on state legal issues completed work on a third draft of the new election law. Commission chairperson Vigen Khachatrian reported at a press conference that the new draft election law includes the most admissible parts of the two previous drafts. The draft was worked on by the commission–headed by Edward Yegorian–and a working group led by Deputy Speaker Ara Sahakian.
According to Khachatrian–the Central Electoral Committee must be formed on party principle. He criticized the approach which not only became reason for discord but also led to the draft law requiring elections to be organized by parties.
Khachatrian conceded that all political forces should be equally represented in the electoral committees. According to him–opposition representatives also agree with that viewpoint–but believe that contemporary election laws need to be adjusted to the current political situation as they find that the electorate does not trust the authorities. Khachatrian views that as unacceptable–because "the election law should show a tendency towards advancement and ensure justice and transparency of polls."
