GLENDALE–Armenian Educational Foundation reported its 1997 worldwide allocations to Armenian institutions and students totaling $248,776. This is the largest single year allocation since 1986–when AEF established the Chair in Modern Armenian History at UCLA with a $500,000 grant.
In 1997–$68,000 was forwarded to Gumri–Armenia for the construction of the Richard Tufenkian AEF School. The school is 60 percent complete and to date 60 percent of the $260,000 commitment has been disbursed. Also–in 1997 AEF made its final $54,500 payment of the $125,000 pledged in 1993 to the Western Prelacy for the printing of Armenian school text books.
Educational institutions in the United States received $55,000–with $40,000 in gran’s to Armenian day schools for special projects and $15,000 to the Davidian-Mariamian Educational Foundation–which provides after school Armenian language and history classes to 1200 students attending Glendale and Burbank public schools. Additionally–$28,500 were awarded in scholarships to students attending universities and colleges in the United States.
More than $22,000 was allocated to Armenia–including $7,500 for a new printing press for the State Engineering University of Armenia–$5,000 to the Etchmiadzin Seminary–and $10,000 to various organizations in Armenia. Also–AEF allocated $17,500 to Lebanon–including $6,000 in scholarships to students attending Haigazian College–$5,000 to Antelias Seminary–$3,500 to Palanjian College and $3,000 to Ainjar’s Gulbenkian School.
For 1998–AEF has budgeted $350,000–which includes $121,000 for the completion of the Gumri school and an additional $90,000 for furnishing the school.
