YEREVAN (AP Worldstream)–Constitutional amendmen’s proposed by President Robert Kocharian failed to get sufficient votes to take effect–official results showed Wednesday.
In the referendum of the amendmen’s–held in conjunction with national parliament elections on Sunday–the measures got the approval of 563,025 voters. To pass–the amendmen’s needed approval by half the voters who cast ballots and that number needed to be at least one-third of the country’s electorate.
Armenia has about 2.3 million eligible voters–so the amendmen’s needed more than 750,000 votes to pass.
The amendmen’s called for changes in how ministers are appointed and for members of the Armenian Diaspora to be eligible for dual citizenship–among other measures.
