MADRAS, India—Rev. Father Khoren Hovhannisyan, pastor of the Armenians in India and the manager of the Armenian College & Philanthropic Academy along with the chairman, Michael Dutt and Susan Reuben and Sunil Sobti, wardens of the Mother Church of Holy Nazareth visited the historical St Mary’s Church in Chennai on October 20.
The church was established in 1712. They were there for the day to foresee the preparations for the upcoming 300th anniversary celebrations of St Mary’s Church, Madras to be held in 2012.
An Evening prayer service was held followed by a Requeim Service in remembrance of Father Harutyun Shmavonyan who was the editor of ‘Azdarar’, the first Armenian monthly magazine. His grave lies in the compound of the churchyard.
Thereafter, Fr. Hovahannisyan and the church committee members held a meeting to plan and prepare the programmme for the forthcoming 300th anniversary celebrations of the church.
One of the important topics of the meeting was regarding recovery of a building within the church premises by 2012.
Hermine Adamyan, Armenian History teacher of ACPA also attended the meeting. She has undertaken a herculean task to prepare a write-up on the history of Armenians in Chennai by 2012.
