YEREVAN (Combined Sources)–The Armenian Government on Friday appointed new governors to four regions. Armenian Revolutionary Federation members Gabriel Gyozalian and Romik Manukian will run the northwestern provinces of Aragatsotn and Shirak respectively. Both men previously served as deputy heads of the local administrations. Gyozalian replaces ARF’s Hrair Karapetian who was elected to the parliament from the party’s proportional representation list.
The eastern Gegharkunik and southern Vayots Dzor provinces will be governed by Orinats Yerkir’s Stepan Barseghian and Samvel Sargsian. The latter previously headed Vayots Dzor’s tax inspection bureau.
During the opening session of Armenia’s National Assembly on Thursday–deputies voted by 92 to 6 to elect the leader of the Orinats Yerkir party Artur Baghdasarian speaker of the National Assembly. They also overwhelmingly appointed Tigran Torosian of the Republican Party (HHK) and Vahan Hovannisian of the ARF as vice deputies.
ARF representation in the President’s cabinet include Social Security Minister Aghvan Vartanian–Agriculture Minister David Lokian and Health Minister Norayr Davidian.
In addition to the ministerial portfolios and the post of vice-speaker–the ARF will head the parliament committee on foreign relations. ARF Supreme Body Representative Armen Rustamian was elected its chairman.
On Friday in New York–Armenia’s new Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Armen Martirosian handed over his credential to UN Secretary General Koffi Anan.
The Armenian foreign ministry said that during a short conversation that followed the credential presentation ceremony–both men expressed satisfaction of UN-Armenia cooperation and voiced their willingness to deepen that cooperation. Ambassador Martirosian thanked the UN for its continued assistance to Armenia.
