YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan–Armenpress)–There has been great unrest in the Abkhazia region of Georgia recently–where many people have died–16 of which were Armenian. Armenia’s government officials have publicly expressed their distress over the current situation in Abkhazia.
During a Parliamentary hearing on Wednesday–Foreign Affairs Minister Vardan Oskanian said the situation is "difficult," and the government needs to be aware of certain outside forces who might try to endanger Georgian-Armenian relations. Oskanian added that Armenia is aware of the situation as much as it can from Yerevan. "At this point we are negotiating with all the concerned parties on all possible levels in order to understand what exactly is going on and to soften the situation particularly for the Armenian living within the region."
In Yerevan’s Zvartnots airport–on his return from Dushanbe–Defense Minister Serj Sarkissian said–"Georgia’s instability is harmful to our country even if it does not spread throughout the region–it will inevitably effect our domestic and other relations."
Aghvan Vardanian–leader of the ARF faction in Armenia’s Parliament suggested to review the issue of sending a parliamentary delegation to the region. He said–"All the parliamentary factions and groups should participate in a discussion about forming a fact finding mission–similar to ones sent in the past to Javakhk and Abkhazia. These missions can be helpful in relieving the conflicting situation there–with negotiations or other peaceful means."
