YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–At its September 26 meeting–the Armenian National Academy of Sciences Honorary Doctores were conferred on Mikael Poghossian–a well-known specialist in aircraft industry and Director General of the Sukhoy design office (one of the best known design offices in Russia). The title of Honorary Doctor has also been conferred on Vardan Grigorian–a prominent specialist in Armenian studies and President of the New York Carnegy corporation–as well as on Eduard Ailamazian–the leading Russian specialist in obstetrics and gynecology and President of St. Petersburg Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
The ANAS plenary session also considered the prospects for development of an information technologies center in Armenia. This topic was discussed within the ANAS Vice-President Yuri Shukurian’s report on the "Computer Sciences and Information Technologies CSIT’2001" international conference held in Yerevan September 17-20.
The scientific level of the conference was lauded–considering the fact that the country’s authorities regard the IT industry as a top priority. Shukurian pointed out that many scientific reports of Armenian specialists were equal to those of leading European authorities in the industry.
The speech by Director of the Yerevan Research Institute of Mathematical Machines mainly dealt with the development of the the information technology industry.
In particular–he pointed to the erroneous policy of developing this industry–which is oriented to small firms–but not to the available scientific potential. "If Armenia intends to develop information technologies–serious steps on the part of the government and serious investmen’s are needed," he said–adding that it is professionals–not bureaucrats–who must develop this industry.
ANAS President Fadey Sargssian pointed out there are many vigorous scientific activities of the ANAS divisions taking place in September–besides the CSIT’2001. The ANAS organized three different scientific conferences in September–including–"Harmonic analysis and approximation," which was organized in association with the Russian Academy of Sciences–the international conference on brain neurochemistry as well as the 4th international conference of young doctors. Many leading scientists from the US and Europe were and are expected to be present at the conferences.
