YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–A statement published in Baku revealed that Secretary of State Madeleine Albright will broker a meeting between Azeri president Haydar Aliyev and Armenian Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian Wednesday in Washington.
Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported that in a letter addressed to Aliyev–Albright expressed her desire to learn more about recent developmen’s in the peace process and determine the future role of the US and the OSCE Minsk Group in that effort–as well as ways that the latter bodies may assist the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Albright indicated that in the process of drafting a new peace proposal for the region–it behoove the leaders to not argue over the status of Karabakh–but rather to devote the time to constructively dividing tasks and identifying roles for each party in the conflict resolution effort.
The Secretary of State also said that the Armenia’s of Karabakh should be included in the negotiation process and that the roles of each side to the conflict must be clearly defined.
President of Armenia Robert Kocharian met Monday with US Deputy Ambassador Michael Fuller who handed Kocharian a message from the Albright–the presidential press service reported.
In her message to Kocharian–Albright praised efforts toward peace established through direct talks between Kocharian and Aliyev and said that the international community could be instrumental in assisting in the progression of that effort.
