BAKU (Combined Sources)–Azeri President Ilham Aliyev met with a group of Azeri and Armenian academicians, who had met with the presidents of Armenia and the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic a day earlier.
The group Azerbaijan and Armenian public figures led by the Armenian and Azeri Ambassadors to Russia, Armen Smbatyan and Polad Bulbuloglu, toured Stepanakert and Shushi on Thursday under the auspices of the OSCE. Later that day visited Yerevan to meet with Armenian President Robert Kocharian.
The group included Prof. Armen Smbatyan, the Armenian Ambassador to Russia, Prof Sergey Sarachyan, the Director of the Yerevan State Conservatoire, Academian Radik Martirosyan, the President of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, Prof. Alexander Grigoryan, People’s Artist of Armenia, Head of the Russian Drama Theater, Lyudmila Grigoryan, Head of the Therapeutic Department of the Republican Hospital of Armenia, Prof Polad Bulbuloglu, the Azeri Ambassador to Russia, People’s Artist of Azerbaijan, Prof Farhad Badalbayli, the rector of the Baku Musical Academy, People Artist of USSR, Prof Kamal Abdullayev, the Rector of the Baku Slavic University, correspondent member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, Honorary Scientific Figure, Prof Azer Pahsa Neymatov, the Chairman of the Azeri Union of Theater Figures, People’s Artist of Azerbaijan, Ilham Fataliyev, the honorary Engineer of Azerbaijan, a businessmen.
Reaffirming his country’s position on the Karabakh conflict President Aliyev emphasized that the dispute could only be solved on the basis of the principles of territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and inviolability of borders, with granting a high level of self-governance to Nagorno-Karabakh, Trend reports.
The delegation of Armenian and Azeri academicians, headed by the two countries’ ambassadors to Russian Wednesday met with Armenian President Robert Kocharian and the president of Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Arkady Ghoukasian.
Ghoukasian met with the delegation headed by Armenian Ambassador to Russia Armen Smbatyan and Azeri Ambassador to Russia Polad Byul-Byul Oghlu, to discuss establishment of dialogue and confidence building between sides to the Karabakh conflict.
Ghoukasian stressed the importance of the ambassadors’ initiative, which he said can create a healthy and constructive atmosphere in the conflict resolution process. More importantly, Ghoukasian said that encouraging intolerance and calls for a military resolution of the conflict only hinder the peace process.
The participants expressed hope that the initiative launched by the academicians would continue in the future and would embrace broader circles of the society.
