LOS ANGELES–In an effort to help promote one of California’s elected officials of Armenian descent–the Armenian National Committee-Political Action Committee (ANC-PAC) announced that it will organize a reception for State Senator Jackie Kanchelian-Speier as she seeks the position of Lieutenant Governor. Longtime ANC-PAC supporter Koko Topalian will graciously host the event at his home in Tarzana on Sunday–March 5.
"The ANC-PAC is very happy to help promote an Armenian American like Senator Speier to higher office," stated ANC-PAC Chairman Leonard Manoukian. "Senator Speier has actively helped advance issues of concern to Armenian Americans since the beginning of her legislative career in the State Assembly."
Among her leadership and support for numerous legislation and issues pertaining to the Armenian American community–Senator Speier most recently authored the 2005 Armenian Genocide Resolution in California. Senator Speier also co-authored SB 424 with fellow Armenian American Senator Chuck Poochigian–which was signed into law by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The State statute permanently recognizes April 24 as the California Day of Remembrance of the Armenian genocide. Senator Speier was recognized for her achievemen’s as ANCA-WR Woman of the Year in 2005.
Currently–Senator Speier is the only Armenian American woman’serving in the state legislature. If elected to the position of Lieutenant Governor–Senator Speier will be the second Armenian American to serve in statewide office since Governor George Deukmejian (1983-1991).
