GLENDALE–The Armenian National Committee Professional Network (the ANC-PN) has donated $4,000 to the Armenian Relief Society’s (ARS) “Sponsor-a-Child” program.
The funds, raised during the ANC-PN’s annual Christmas Party Fundraiser on December 18, was officially handed to the ARS on January 7, 2009. Over the past year, with the help of their supporters, the ANC-PN has donated proceeds from their events to various Armenian programs and charities worldwide, including the Armenian Bone Marrow Registry, Pyunic orphanage in Armenia, The Armenia Fund and local community programs.
The ANC-PN has been a long-time supporter of the ARS orphan’s support programs in Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh. Over the years, the ANC-PN has sponsored over 20 orphans from Mardouni, Martakert and Askeran through the programs. In 2008, as several of the children of freedom fighters who died defending their villages reached the age of 18, the number of sponsored children was five.
Part of the donation will cover the sponsorship of 2 orphans from Hadroud until they turn 18, and the remaining amount will be used towards paying for the education of 10 orphans through their high school graduation. Last year’s donation helped complete the renovation expenses for the winter playroom-hall at the ARS Sosse Kindergarten in Ashan.
The ARS-WR has provided renovation funding for two Sosse kindergartens in Ashan and Aganapert, and continues to pay for the annual operating expenses for the schools, which costs over $45,000 annually. The region supported 580 orphaned children in Armenia and Karabakh in 2008.
Orphans aided by the ARS “Sponsor-A-Child” program grow and reach an age where they must prepare for their future. The ARS Orphans Education Program was established to help cover the educational expenses of orphans who received assistance under the “Sponsor-A-Child” program. Individuals and organizations are being sought to support the new college students by allocating $320 a year. Interested parties can call Ung. Jarahian at 818-500-1343. Sponsorship forms are available on the ARS-WR website under Armenia and Sponsor-A-Child side-bars at www.ARSwestUSA.org.
A group of the ANC-PN board members, led by its chairman Sevag Demirjian, visited the ARS of Western U.S.A.’s Regional Headquarters (ARS-WR) on January 7, 2009. The board met with General Accountant/Controller Jasik Jarahian, ARS Chairwoman Rima Boghossian and ARS Board Members Maco Setrakian and Asdghig Chitilian to deliver the $4,000 donation. The group included Jeannine Topalian, Linda Adran, Nareeneh Sohbatian and Vicken Chitilian.
“Through the diligent efforts and dedication of the ANC-PN and its supporters, we hope that the orphans living in Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh receive proper care and education,” said Demirjian.
