GLENDALE–The Armenian National Committee’s Professional Network is a long-time supporter of the ARS orphan’s support programs in Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh.
Over the years, the ANC-PN has sponsored over 20 orphans from Mardouni, Martakert and Askeran through the ARS Sponsor-A-Child program. In 2007, as the children of the freedom fighters who died defending their villages reached the age of 18, the number of sponsored children was five.
A group of the ANC-PN members on Jan. 28 led by Arbi Karapetian, President, stopped by the Armenian Relief Society of Western U.S.A.’s Regional Headquarters and met with Jasik Jarahian, General Accountant/Controller and Seda Khajayan, Regional Executive Vice-Chair, and handed a check for $4,000. The group included Jeannine Topalian, Artin Yaghoubian, Sevag Demirjian and Vicken Chitilian.
Part of the donation ($650) will cover the sponsorship of two orphans from Hadroud until they turn 18, and the rest, $3,350, will cover the renovation expenses of the winter playroom-hall at the ARS Sosse Kindergarten in Ashan. The winter weather is too snowy for the children to play outside, so the contribution towards the renovation will be welcome by the school administration.
The ARS-WR has provided renovation funding for two Sosse kindergartens in Ashan and Aganapert, and continues to pay for the annual operating expenses for the schools, which is over $40,000 for 2007-2008. The region supported 580 orphaned children in Armenia and Karabakh in 2007.
As orphans aided by the ARS “Sponsor-A-Child” program have grown and reached an age when they must prepare for their future the ARS Orphans Education Program was established to help cover the educational expenses of the orphans who received assistance under the ARS “Sponsor-A-Child” program. Individuals or organizations are being sought to support the now college students by allocating $320 a year.
The students are studying a range of subjects including: Accounting, Commercial Art, Communication, Computer Science, Dental Technology, Economics, Education, Engineering, Finance, Foreign Languages, Geography, History, Law, Literature, Management Science, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Psychology, Sports and Voice.
By supporting the Orphans Education Program, sponsors help reduce the orphans’ hardship and help them succeed in life. Interested parties can call Ung. Jarahian at (818) 500-1343. Sponsorship forms are available on the ARS-WR website under Armenia and Sponsor-A-Child side-bars at www.ARSwestUSA.org .
