*Radanovich-Bonior-Rogan-Pallone Bill to be Introduced Before April 24.
WASHINGTON (ANN/Groong)–The Armenian Assembly of America and the Armenian National Committee of America have announced their support for legislation–soon to be introduced in Congress–to affirm the US record on the Armenian Genocide.
The legislation is set to be introduced by Congressman George Radanovich (R-Calif.)–Minority Whip David Bonior (D-Mich.)–Representative James Rogan (R-Calif.)–and Armenian Caucus Co-Chairmen Frank Pallone (D-NJ) and John Edward Porter (R-Ill.). Representatives Brad Sherman (D-Calif.)–Joe Knollenberg (R-Mich.)–and Steve Rothman (D- NJ) have already joined as original cosponsors and many other Members are expected to cosponsor the bill prior to its introduction.
The bill requires the President to collect all US records on the Armenian Genocide and provide them to the House International Relations Committee–the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum–and the Armenian Genocide Museum in Yerevan–Armenia. The bill includes a series of eighteen Congressional findings which document the US and international record on the Armenian Genocide.
Following the introduction of the resolution–it will be referred to a Congressional panel–most likely the International Relations Committee–which will need to act on the measure before it moves to the floor for a vote by the full US House of Representatives. This process will take place over a period of months–and may extend throughout the rest of this year. The Assembly and the ANCA have set the goal of final adoption by April 24th of the year 2000–and encourage Armenian Americans and friends to contact their Representatives in the US House to encourage their cosponsorship of this legislation.
