GLENDALE–The Armenian National Committee Glendale Chapter announced on Thursday its endorsement of the Glendale Community College proposed bond measure–Measure GC–slated to be on the November 8 ballot. If approved by voters, proceeds from Measure GC will be used to pay for classroom upgrades, construction of new facilities and technological improvements for programs such as digital media, nursing, science and engineering, law enforcement and firefighting training. Additionally, funds from the bond would go toward supporting programs that benefit the community (vocational training, veterans’ affairs, and transferring support).
“The ANCA-Glendale Chapter is committed to improving the quality of life in our community–and our support for Measure GC underscores this very important commitment,” explained ANCA-Glendale Chapter chairman Artin Manoukian. “Glendale College is one of the centers of vibrant community life in Glendale serving all segments of our population–and as such we see the improvement of facilities as central to the continuation of this institution’s sacred work.”
Measure GC–which will cost Glendale taxpayers $21 per year per $100,000 of assessed property value–in addition to being used to improve current facilities–will also be directed toward the expansion of the campus and its parking lots, a major need for GCC students.
Additionally, the funds will serve thousands of Armenians students, who make up over 40% percent of the student populace, making it one of the largest institutions for higher education for Armenian students in the world.
Following a similar resolution that passed in 2003, Measure G, the new measure looks to build on the success of the previous one, adding much need and vital improvements to the campus and educational materials. As one of the best community colleges in the state, the funds from measure would allow the community college to maintain its high level of instruction. The ANCA-Glendale urges all community members to vote for this resolution in the upcoming November 8 election.
The ANCA-Glendale advocates for the social, economic, cultural, and political rights of the city’s Armenian-American community and promotes increased civic participation at the grassroots and public policy levels.
