GLENDALE–In response to Azeri president Gaidar Aliyev’s pending visit to Washington the Armenian American community of western United States has generated more than 45,000 postcards to President Bill Clinton protesting the former KGB General and Politburo Member’s invitation to the White House.
Soon after the ANCA postcard campaign was announced on Armenian television–radio and in the newspapers–the ANCA-WR was inundated with requests from Armenian Americans from throughout the United States–including San Francisco–Fresno–Las Vegas–Seattle–Denver and Salt Lake City–for tens of thousands of postcards.
The demand for postcards was so great that the supply was temporarily exhausted which prompted a second printing.
In response to continued demand–the ANCA headquarters in Washington recently announced that a third printing of the postcards has just been completed.
"Given Gaidar Aliyev’s unsavory past and his undemocratic rise to power–coupled with his public pronouncement to forcibly impose a solution on the Armenia’s of Karabakh–the Armenian National Committee of America-Western Region strongly urges President Clinton to rescind his invitation to the White House," stated Vicken Sonentz-Papazian–Executive Director of the ANCA-WR.
"I am very proud to say that our community’s response to this challenge has been remarkable. For example–during a mere six hour period during the recent Homenetmen Navasartian Games closing weekend–the ANC gathered more than 1,500 signed postcards," said Sonentz-Papazian.
The ANCA-WR urges the community to maintain the pressure on the White House and remember that there is still roughly three weeks before Gaidar Aliyev arrives in Washington.
The Azeri president is scheduled to arrive in Washington on August 1. His schedule during his stay has yet to be made public.
