GLENDALE–California State Superintendent of Public Instruction–Delaine Eastin met with Armenian National Committee of America-Western Region representatives last week to discuss ways to incorporate the Armenian Genocide in the teaching of history and human rights to California public school students.
ANCA-WR Board Members Steven Dadaian and Karo Khanjian–joined by ANCA-WR Executive Director Vicken Sonentz-Papazian and Toll Middle School Principal Hasmig Danielian–emphasized the need to teach students world history and human rights in an accurate and up-to-date manner.
The ANC representatives and Superintendent Eastin also explored various avenues by which California’s public school students could have greater access to materials covering the Armenian Genocide.
"The ANCA-WR is pleased by Superintendent Eastin’s knowledge and understanding of the Armenian Genocide and the need to incorporate the lessons of this on-going human rights violation in the educational materials for California’s youth," stated Sonentz-Papazian–"Given current world events and the renewed focus on addressing human rights abuses–the ANCA-WR is confidant that California’s public officials and the educational establishment are– now more than ever–aware of the need to teach world history in a more thorough and factual manner," concluded Sonentz-Papazian.
