GLENDALE, CA — The Armenian National Committee of America – Western Region (ANCA-WR) today announced its endorsement of Mayor Gavin Newsom for Lieutenant Governor of California.
“When considering their choice for Lieutenant Governor, we urge all Armenian-Americans to vote for Gavin Newsom, a dedicated public servant and supporter of our issues”, said Aida Dimejian, Chair of the ANCA-WR Board of Directors.
Mayor Newsom was appointed to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1997, representing District 2. He was first elected Mayor of San Francisco in 2003 and was reelected to a second term in 2007. The ANCA-WR endorsed Gavin Newsom based on his long and faithful record of public service and his steadfast support of issues of concern to Armenian-Americans. Ever since his tenure on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, Newsom has held an open door policy toward his constituents, carrying their message to City Hall.
As Mayor of San Francisco, Gavin Newsom issued annual proclamations commemorating the anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. Earlier this year, he joined the San Francisco Bay Area commemoration at San Francisco’s historic Saint Ignatius Church where he insisted, “It is time for the President and Congress to do the right thing and acknowledge the Armenian Genocide.” Newsom also sent a letter to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi urging her to support the Armenian Genocide resolution in 2007 when congressional supporters began to waver.
Previously as Supervisor, Newsom supported the sale of the Mount Davidson Cross to the Council of Armenian-American Organizations of Northern California who preserved the landmark and installed a bronze plaque at the base honoring the victims of the Armenian Genocide.
The ANCA-WR is the largest and most influential Armenian American grassroots advocacy organization in the Western United States. Working in coordination with a network of offices, chapters, and supporters throughout the Western United States and affiliated organizations around the country, the ANCA-WR advances the concerns of the Armenian American community on a broad range of issues.

Gavin should be elected because he has shown a genuine concern for Californians because he preserved funding for Domestic Violence Programs in San Francisco. Without a battered women shelter for a battered woman to go to, a battered woman could be killed or severely beaten. This is a very important point that Gavin recognized. Most men are bigger than women. The First Lady of California has done absolutely nothing for battered women, since her husband, again, vetoed funding for battered women shelters. Schwarzenegger, Shriver, Maldonado and Whitman could not careless whether battered wives live or die. Battered mothers and their children are not expendable.
Agreed Earl Richards you are correct, not just on Genocidal issues but making our domestic life more safe for women and children.
This is the type of leadership we need, someone who cares about all people.
I’m sorry, I’m not voting for Gavin. He may be a great person to talk to and a good gentleman. I guess, in my view, also, he may be working out and preparing for you an anti family agenda; if in case, he wins. If you like man to marry a man and a woman to marry a woman, then vote for him. At the end, you may see them teaching your children at school and brainwashing them into becoming one. Is that what you want for your children? The choice is yours. After all, everyone is free to vote to whomever he or she likes.
You have got to be kidding right? This ultra left wing nut job doesn’t deserve a job as state janitor much less lieutenant governor. God forbid. Wake up people. Left wing kooks like this are the ones destroying the fabric of this country. Look what he has done to San Francisco! It used to be a great city to live in. Now no one can afford it but of all the taxes he has backed and increased and all the left wing kooks that hold the city council seats. I know because I live there! I know the genocide is an important issue but as Armenian-Americans we need to consider the well being of this country too.
