YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–A positive result of the early presidential election is the absence of political tension–which allows for a new government to begin work solving socio-economic issues–said Hovanness Igitian–Armenian National Movement administrative member and chairman of the parliament standing committee on foreign relations.
According to Igitian–the fairness of the election is apparent by the fact that "no gates have been turned down" even two days after the elections. Igitian explained that the relative calmness is a result of the lack of opposition candidates in the run-off and the result of Karen Demirchian non-aggressive behavior.
"I think that Karen Demirchian will take his defeat calmly–find the strength to overlook some things and congratulate the new president. And that can set precedent for a very important tradition in Armenia–for the defeated candidate to congratulate the winner even if there were irregularities. By the way–there are no ideal elections–there will always be irregularities," Igitian said.
According to him–a favorable atmosphere allowed electoral commissions to work normally and prove that they can work–if there is no tension.
Igitian described as a negative phenomenon the use of compromising and discrediting information during the election campaign.
"That method is used in civilized countries as well–but it is not considered the main campaign method–while it has become the basis of propaganda in Armenia. I hope this is not peculiar to people–but only to the pre-election phase–and today this negative atmosphere will not transform into policy," he stated
Igitian also hoped that observers will come up with a positive report which will contribute to Armenia’s progress in the sphere of foreign policy.
