ANTELLIAS, Lebanon–In a letter to French President Jacques Chirac, His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia commended the French leader on his recent statemen’s in Armenia, where he said that the recognition of the Armenian Genocide must be a precondition for Turkey’s entry into the European Union. The letter, which was delivered to the French Embassy in Beirut, also stressed that the denial of the Armenian Genocide opens wide doors for other genocides, "thus, the international community seriously should approach the Armenian Genocide, which remains unpunished." In commending Chirac, the Catholicos said that France’s unwavering commitment to justice and rule of law must serve as an example to other nations that continue to deny the Genocide. "Europe is not a mere geographic territory, nor is a political entity. Europe is a community that truly based on cultural and moral standards that is based on human rights. Hence, I ask ‘where is Turkey’s place in the European community?’" wrote Aram I.
