TEHRAN–During a reception at the Liberty Hotel Monday in honor of the visiting Catholicos Aram I–Iran’s Islamic International Relations director Ayatollah Taskhiri announced that Aram I and the Catholicosate of the Holy See of Cilicia remain "good friends of the Islamic Republic of Iran."
"More than ever we share a close friendship with Catholicos Aram I and Antelias. The Catholicos has always assisted us and remains a trusted ally. We have special respect for Antelias and are aware that it has an important role in the Diaspora," said Taskhiri who hosted the reception.
"Iran’s Armenia’s will always remain our brothers and sisters and we have a special kinship with them," added Taskhiri.
In response–Catholicos Aram I also outlined the important role of the Iranian-Armenian community and praised the friendship between the Holy See of Cilicia and the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Taskhiri was accompanied by numerous high-level officials–as well as several hundred Armenian and Iranian community leaders.
During a public gathering at the Ararat Stadium later that evening–the Catholicos stressed–to the thousands who had gathered–the imperative of strengthening ties with the homeland–the Armenian church and culture.
Also speaking at the event were Tehran Prelacy Executive Council chairman Varoujan Arakelian–religious and cultural leaders of Iranian-Armenian community.
The Catholicos’ visit and his message was widely covered by the Iranian media.
