YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The Armenian Revolutionary Federation Executive Council of Armenia and the Democratic Party of Armenia have called on Socialist International to intervene in suggested plans of UNESCO’s celebration of the 700th anniversary of the Ottoman Empire.
This request comes after UNESCO’s executive committee’s plans to schedule the jubilee during its 1999 annual schedule–which will be up for discussion shortly by the body’s plenary commission.
The letter to Socialist International stated that the Ottoman Empire was the bastion of death and evil for many peoples and cultures. The letter further stated that the beginning of the Empire–just as its end was marked with bloodshed. At its end–the leaders of this Empire–stated the letter–committed one of the most horrendous crimes against humanity–the Armenian Genocide.
"We protest UNESCO’s plans and ask you to intervene in this shameful matter," concluded the letter to Socialist International.
