YEREVAN (Yerkir)–The Armenian Revolutionary Federation Supreme Council of Armenia issued an announcement Wednesday on the current political situation in Armenia. Below is the translated text of that announcement:
The presidential election clearly demonstrated that the significant portion of Armenia’s population deman’s serious reforms. However, unfortunately, instead of addressing the people’s concerts through political means, the destructive path of confrontation was chosen.
As a result:
Psychological demoralization, hopelessness, polarization and mutual intolerance, as well as uncertainty for the country’s development and endangerment of basic individual rights have reached perilous levels.
An "us and them" mentality has become prevalent in political life, in an effort to divide the people; normal relations and dialogue between the government and the opposition is missing; radicalism and extremism dictate the political course.
Armenia’s ranking and reputation as a stable developing economy and a viable investment potential is endangered.
Threats against Armenia’s and the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic’s security have risen, presenting new foreign challenges
Further deterioration of the situation is ripe with military and political threats against the independence and security of both republics.
In this environment the country is faced with the imperative of re-establishing its national and state objectives, deepening the multi-faceted democratic reform process, restoring order and creating a national consensus atmosphere.
In order to strengthen and rebuild beneficial environment for development, it is vital to prevent a new wave of mass exodus from the country, eliminate investment risks.
The only way to emerge from this situation is to leave behind all political and individual interests in the name of the homeland and the realization of national and state aspirations facing Armenia’s. The best possible solution is to create a government of national unity by all political parties represented in parliament.
The Armenian Revolutionary Federation Supreme Council of Armenia is willing to take part in this national unity government and calls on the political opposition to use this opportunity to make the process of reforms in the country more comprehensive and full-fledged.
The national unity government must prioritize the following:
-End the executive branch’s intervention in the judicial arena and ensure complete independence for that branch.
-Eliminate impunity and make all people equal before the law, regardless of their position or rank
-Create a completely independent electoral system to guarantee people’s confidence in the electoral process and forbid the government’s involvement
-Create anti-trust regulation to prevent monopolies and encourage fair competition
-Guarantee exchange of opinions, freedom of speech and an objective and transparent operation of the national broadcasting system
-Guarantee the complete participation of the opposition in the political system
-Establish a social policy based on the basic needs of the people.
In order to restore order and resolve the aforementioned issues and immediately end the post-election tensions, the ARF Supreme Council of Armenia finds it an imperative to create a program without delays.
In order to realize this program a Public Representative Council should be created comprised of individuals, organizations, non-parliamentary forces to work alongside the president to create an atmosphere of confidence and trust and establish lasting ties between the public and the government.
