YEREVAN (YERKIR)–The annual convention of the Cyprus Social Democratic Movement (EDEC) was held in Nicosia on November 15-16–with representatives of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Bureau–ARF Cyprus–as well as the Armenian National Committee of Cyprus–among the invited guests.
Also attending was Socialist International Secretary General Luis Ayala–representatives from the Greek PASOK party–and representatives from socialist parties of Europe–Syria–Italy–Croatia–and Egypt.
ANC-Europe Chairperson Hilda Choboyan greeted the convention on behalf of the ARF Bureau and conveyed support to the people of Cyprus in their fight for a fair settlement on the division of their country. Expressing her satisfaction with Cyprus’s accession to the European Union–Choboyan hoped that Cyprus and the EDEC would support Armenia in its efforts to join the European community.
Referring to the friendship of Armenia’s and Cypriots–Choboyan reiterated that the settlement of the Cyprus issue–the concern of human rights violations of ethnic minorities in Turkey–and recognition of the Armenian Genocide remain the pre-conditions for Turkey’s accession to the European Union.
She also spoke of the cooperation agreement signed between the ARF and EDEC in 2001–and conveyed readiness on behalf of the ARF to further cooperation on local–bilateral–and international levels.
While in Cyprus–Choboyan outlined the activities of the Armenian National Committee–and also met with Cyprus EU representative Adrian Van der Meer–as well as representatives of various political parties and parliament.
