YEREVAN (ARF Press Office)–Maria Titizian of Armenia represented the Armenian Revolutionary Federation at a meeting of Women’s Bureau of the Socialist International–which concluded Wednesday in Casablanca–Morocco.
Some 35 member-parties and 70 delegates took part in the conference–which convened with welcoming remarks by Nouzha Chekrouni–the Minister of Women’s Families and Children of Morocco and is member of the Democratic Party of that country.
The theme of the meeting was "Strategies and Realities for Greater Participation of Women in Politics." Presenting papers on this topic were representatives from Morocco–Philippines–Nicaragua and the Netherlands. The participating delegates also provided a brief accounting of the current state of women’s participation in politics within their respective countries.
In her remarks–ARF representative Titizian reported that Armenia–too–faces similar need for greater participation and encouragement of women in politics–adding however–that the matter must viewed within the proper historical and social context.
Titizian added that the ARF–as a political force in Armenia is also encouraging women’s participation in politics–adding that the party has proposed changes to the election laws–which would require that 25 percent of each parties proposed candidates be women.
The ARF representative explained that whatever the outcome the law amendment debate–the ARF has decided that 25 percent of its slate of candidates for parliament will be women.
At the close of the conference–an announcement was issued reflecting the results of discussions and reports.
