YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)– The Armavir-based border detachment–"Armenia," of the Russian border troops will celebrate its 75th anniversary on May 26.
Chief of the Armavir detachment–Lieutenant-Colonel Vaghram Manoukian said that the proportion of Russian to Armenian soldiers is about 50:50. The funding of borderguards is carried out in the same proportion (50 percent is covered by Russia and 50 percent by Armenia).
The detachment–is responsible for a 130-mile-long stretch of the Armenian-Turkish border. According to the assistant commander of the "Armenia" group–Pavel Kokarev–no violations have been reported this year. The last incident occurred last November–when a young man of Armenian origin entered into the Arax River to get baptized.
Russian borderguards are serving in accordance with Russian legislation and military rules–however during meetings with their Turkish counterparts they represent the Republic of Armenia and defend the border of independent Armenia–Kokarev said.
Journalists had an opportunity to visit border posts in Getashen–Pshtavan and Margara and observe the conditions.
Journalists also visited the Margara bridge–which links Armenia and Turkey. According to borderguards–they are ready to ensure communication between the two countries. They also said that the building of a future customs post is almost complete–however–since there is no relevant government decision–the process is delayed.
