YEREVAN (Armenpress)-A recent announcement by Georgian president Eduard Shevardnadze that Armenia and Azerbaijan are considering the re-opening of the Baku-Nakhichevan-Yerevan railway has raised a lot of questions in Azerbaijan–reported Azeri Bilik Dunyasi agency.
According to Azeri prime minister Arthur Rasizade–the idea of re-opening the idle railway should not be denounced. "Under the current opposition between the two countries Azerbaijan refuses economic co-operation with Armenia," said Rasizade.
Speaking before the Georgian parliament on Wednesday–Heydar Aliyev expressed hope that his direct meetings with Armenian president Robert Kocharian will result in peaceful resolution of the Armenian-Azeri conflict.
Georgian Prime news agency quoted Aliyev as saying that "it is necessary that both Armenia and Azerbaijan reach a compromise."
Aliyev also said that establishment of peace in South Caucasus is compulsory for economic development of the region. In this respect Aliyev said that the territorial integrity of Georgia is one of the necessary factors for establishment of peace in the region.
"The absence of political stability in Armenia is the biggest obstacle in the way of Karabakh conflict resolution," announced Azeri foreign minister Vilayat Guliyev in regards to regional issues.
"For reaching a long-awaited peace it is necessary that the Armenian leadership be strong. The compromise solution requires inner stability in both countries," he is quoted by Bilik Dunyasi as saying.
