LOS ANGELES (AP)–Fredy Garcia scored late in the first half as Guatemala and Armenia tied 1-1 Sunday in an exhibition soccer match.
The game at the Los Angeles Coliseum included three ejections and five yellow-card cautions.
Gagik Manukyan opened the scoring for Armenia in the 20th minute–taking Aram Hakobyan’s back heel pass 40 yards from the goal and dribbling to the top of the penalty area where he put a shot past goalkeeper Edgar Estrada.
Garcia took a pass from German Ruano and scored for 25 yards in the 41st minute–beating goalkeeper Harutyn Abrahamyan to the upper left corner of the net.
Both teams were reduced to 10 players when Guatemalan mid-fielder Julio Giron and Armenian mid-fielder Rafael Nazaryan received red cards for a scuffle during stoppage time late in the first half.
Giron entered the match in the 41st minute replacing Cesar Corleto–who was injured in a collision with Armenian mid-fielder Harutyun Vardanyan.
Guatemala was forced to play the final 15 minutes with nine players after defender Mario Acevedo received his second yellow card from American referee Brian Hall in the 75th minute. The yellow card was Guatemala’s fourth. Armenia received one.
Guatemala will face Mexico’s under-23 national team Wednesday night at the Coliseum as the opener of a doubleheader featuring a match between Ecuador and Iran.
Armenia will face the United States’ under-23 national team Sunday at the Rose Bowl following the US-Iran match.
