YEREVAN (Combined Sources)–President Robert Kocharian, the National Assembly of Armenia and The Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed Thursday the adoption of the Armenian Genocide Resolution in the Foreign Affairs Committee of the US House of Representatives.
"Recognition of historical injustice cannot do harm to the bilateral relations between the United States and Turkey," declared President Kocharian, who is in Belgium for a working visit with EU Foreign Policy Chief Javier Solana.
Despite the tension resulting immediately after the recognition of the Armenian Genocide by France, the commodity turnover between Turkey and France increased a year after France passed the resolution, said Kocharian.
As for the statemen’s on reconciliation between Armenia and Turkey, the President considers the simplest formula would be the launch of dialogue without any preconditions.
"We welcome the adoption of the resolution affirming the Armenian Genocide by the American House Committee on Foreign Affairs, said a representative of the Foreign Ministry. "This is an important toward the realization of justice."
Speaking on behalf of the Armenian National Assembly, Vice-Speaker Tigran Torosian thanked the members of Congress who, in the face of great pressure, demonstrated high moral values and voted for the Genocide Resolution in the House Foreign Affairs Committee. "The resolution adopted by key House Committee is so influential that there are serious reasons to think that the plenary session of the Congress will adopt it," said Torosian.
"We shall prove that Armenia’s are an important factor in international politics, said Vahan Hovhannesian. "This is important for our history it reconfirms the historical truth and can really be a serious impetus for the development of Armenian-Turkish relations."
"Unless the genocide is recognized, Turkey has no reason to improve relations with Armenia and Armenia’s," said Torosian. According to him the thesis that recognition of the Armenian Genocide will hinder the development of Armenian-Turkish relations is completely false.
The Armenian Genocide Resolution refers not only to the recognition of the Genocide and the process of restoration of historical rights, it also addresses contemporary issues such as the opening of roads, lifting of the economic blockade and suspension of Anti-Armenian projects, remarked Torosian.
The text of the resolution opposed by the Bush administration and various Turkish lobbyist groups in the United States says the killings of up to 1.5 million Armenia’s was a genocide that should be acknowledged fully in U.S. foreign policy towards Turkey, along with "the consequences of the failure to realize a just resolution."
The measure is likely to be sent on to a vote in the full Democratic-led House, where a majority has already signed on to the resolution. A parallel measure is in the Senate pipeline.
"I think it will make Turkey revise its stereotypes and show a serious approach to the Armenian genocide issue," said ARF Supreme Council of Armenia Chairman Armen Rustamian, who is also Chairmen of the Foreign Relations Committee of the National Assembly. "I am sure, gradually Turkey itself will understand that this resolution marks the beginning of Turkey’s modernization and reform," Rustamian said.
