
STEPANAKERT (Armenpress)–Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian arrived in Stepanakert Thursday to participate in celebrations dedicated to the 16th anniversary of the Liberation of Shoushi.
May 9 is commemorated in Armenia and Karabakh in honor of multiple occasions. It is celebrated as the Day of Victory and Peace in honor of the more than 400,000 Armenian soldiers who fought in the Soviet Army during World War II. May 9 is also celebrated in remembrance of the Liberation of Shoushi from Azeri control. Itis also marked as Karabakh’s Defense Army Day.
The celebrations began on Thursday in Stepanakert. The representatives of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic’s leadership, the Commanding officers of the Karabakh Defense Army and the public are set to visit Stepanakert’s Memorial complex on Friday to honor the memory of those who died in the Great Patriotic War (WWII) and the Karabakh war.
While in Stepanakert, Sarkisian met with his Karabakh counterpart Bako Sahakian to discuss various bilateral issues.
Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan also congratulated Armenia’s on the occasion of Victory and Peace Day.
"Today I direct my warmest congratulations to the war veterans, our freedom fighters and whole people and pay tribute to the memory of those who lost their lives in this fight," he said.
