YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–"Development Of Children Is The Development Of Humanity" was the slogan under which the special session of the UN General Assembly devoted to the children’s problems was held in New York May 8-10. The press conference held in the Ministry of Social Security on June 12 was devoted to the issues discussed during the session.
Deputy Minister Araik Petrossian said all UN member-countries participated in the session–and general participants included 300 children from different countries–including two from Armenia. The Assembly adopted a document called "The World With Decent Life Standards For Children," according to which–all the member-countries–including Armenia–pledged to create decent life standards for children in the next decade.
Head of the Department of Protection of Mothers and Babies Karine Saribekian said that on the basis of this document–each country must work out its national program of actions. The goal is to reduce the death rate of children and mothers by 1/3 until 2015–eliminate polyomielitis and reduce the number of undernourished children by 30 percent.
Deputy Minister of Education and Science Aida Topuzian pointed out that children must be given an opportunity to participate in building their own life and have a right to voice. The availability of education and protection of children’s rights are problems that will be faced in the next decade.
