YEREVAN (RFE/RL)–Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian said on Monday Armenia is ready to cooperate with the United States and the international community on fighting international terror networks blamed for the September 11 attacks on new New York and Washington. Reaffirming Yerevan’s support for American military action against Afghanistan–Oskanian called for a consolidated global effort to eradicate "international terrorism."
Oskanian was quoted as marking the remarks at a meeting with a visiting team of diplomats from the European Union. The suicide attacks and their aftermath were high on the agenda of the meeting–according to the Armenian foreign ministry.
Defense Minister Serge Sarkisian said last week that Armenia "can not fail to support anti-terrorist actions" taken by the US. But neither he nor Oskanian specified what concrete form that support could take.
Meanwhile–members of a Russian-Armenian inter-parliamentary commission on bilateral cooperation–on Monday urged Washington to display caution in its efforts to identify and bring to justice the masterminds of the terrorist hijackings of four American commercial planes. In a statement issued after its session in Yerevan–the commission–said the planned retaliatory strikes "must be strictly measured and must not lead to a destabilization on both regional and global levels
