YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–While Armenia applies for membership into the World Trade Organization (WTO)–WTO specialists are studying the economic legislation of Armenia. At a press-conference on Tuesday–Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry Tigran Davtian said that that the government may receive proposals on legislative amendmen’s which–according to him–will not influence the process of Armenia’s accession the WTO. Thus–Davtian said–Armenia’s legislation will conform to WTO requiremen’s.
Davtian said that the Armenia ended its bilateral negotiations with 15 interested countries–and Armenia is close to completing negotiations with the US delegation (the US was authorized to represent the WTO in Armenia). He also said that as a result of the negotiations–the issues of allowing agriculture–the service industry–and intellectual property–to fall under the authority of the WTO were decided in Armenia’s favor.
The WTO includes 144 countries and there are 28 countries who are in the process of joining. According to Davtian–Armenia is the first among the 28 candidates and it’s membership will be decided on within the coming months. .
