YEREVAN (Arka)–Armenia and Iran are to build the most powerful hydro-electric power plants in the South Caucasus, Armenian Deputy Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Ara Simonyan said at a parliament session Tuesday.
The plants will be situated on the Arax River, which divides the two countries at the border. One of them will be built in Meghri of Armenia, the other in Karachilar of Iran, he said.
Each of the two plants is expected to generate 800 million kilowatts per hour of electricity every year. According to Simonyan, the most powerful hydro-electric plant in Armenian is currently the Sevan-Hrazdan cascade, which produces 500-600 million kilowatts per hour annually.
The practical stage of the project is to start soon and a final agreement on the project needs to be ratified for construction to start, Simonyan said.
