TEHRAN (Radio Zamaneh)—A senior Iranian official announced that Iran is enlisting Armenia’s aid to resolve the rapid drying of Lake Urumieh.
Lake Urumieh is a salt lake in northwestern Iran near Turkey. The lake is between the provinces of East Azarbaijan and West Azarbaijan, west of the southern portion of the similarly shaped Caspian Sea. It is the largest lake inside Iran, and the third salt water lake on earth, with a surface area of approximately 5,200 km square (2,000 mile square).
MohammadJavad Mohammadzadeh, the head of Iran’s Environment Protection Organization, announced today that Iran and Armenia have agreed on transferring water from Armenia to counter the critical fall in Lake Urumieh’s water levels.
He remarked that hot weather and a lack of precipitation have brought the lake to its lowest water levels ever recorded.
He added that recovery plans for the lake include the transfer of water from Eastern Iranian Azerbaijan Province.
Previously, Iranian authorities had announced a plan to transfer water from the Arax River, which borders Iran and Republic of Azerbaijan. But that country objected, and the 950-billion-touman plan was scrapped.
Armenia and Iran recently signed an agreement to cooperate on environmental projects.
Iran maintains that the drying of Lake Urumieh would be a “national environmental catastrophe” that could also have adverse effects on neighboring countries.
Iranian officials have reported that half of the lake, a surface area of more than 3,000 square kilometers, has dried up and turned into salt fields.
In past months, clashes have broken out in Tabriz and Urumieh between government forces and protesters, who blame local mismanagement of provincial affairs for the drying of the lake.
With the rapid evaporation of lake waters and the increase in salt concentration, certain sea weeds have turned the lake water red.
Iranian environmentalists have warned that without “speedy, serious and national action”, salt storms will develop that could reach as far as Tehran province.
Historically, Lake Urmiah was also at the border of southern Armenia, making it also an Armenian lake. The central part of Armenia was thus between the three lakes, Van, Sevan, and Urmiah. Van is under occupation as a result of genocide. Throughout history the Armenian populations in the region of Urmiah gradually dwindled and/or assimilated, thus the region today is known as “Azerbaijan province” in Iran. The name “Azerbaijan” is also the inspiration for the artificial Caucasian Turk country of today which exists for the sole purpose of supplying energy from the western standpoint, and also to wipe out Armenia from the Turkish standpoint.
The most revealing part of the article:
“Previously, Iranian authorities had announced a plan to transfer water from the Arax River, which borders Iran and Republic of Azerbaijan. But that country objected”
Who the hell is Azerbaijan to be dictating what can and can’t be done in a land which does not belong to it? This for me is enough proof that this artificial country Azerbaijan must not exist. This terrorist country is destructive for anything and everything that has the displeasure of being in its vicinity. No country in the world exists as low, vile, nasty, culture-less, and moronic as Azerbaijan.
Thanks to the dirty, greedy satanists of the west we saw our Medieval Khatchkars destroyed in our own lands in Nakhichevan. And these same dirty, greedy satanists are sitting back smiling and preaching peace while the two terrorists Turkey and Azerbaijan are attempting to strangulate Armenia. It all makes me so sick.
Isnt this one of the three lakes of historic Armenia?
Where is our water comming from?
Very well put Kevork !!!
Lake Urmia is on the verge of drying due to the Iranian authorities’ lack of understanding. Now why must Armenian pay the price??? Do you think saving the Lake is possible at all without damaging the Armenian nature??? This is one of the most saddening news I ever heard. The Armenian authorieis mustn’t accept this project.
Lake Urmia is on the verge of drying due to Iranians lack of understanding. Now why Armenia should pay the price??? Do you think saving the Lake is possible at all??? This project will cause the destruction of the Armenia’s nature and ecology. Armenian authorities mustn’t make this terrible mistake.
Where in Armenia water would come from? Don’t we need our water ourselves in Armenia. How could we sell water that is soooo needed in our country? Who is selling, the government? What right do they have to sell something that belongs to the country, not to the government administration. Oh, now days everything in Armenia is for sale, it’s the bottom line….
