YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Armenian nature protection minister Aram Harutyunian and UN Resident Coordinator and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Resident Representative Consuelo Vidal signed Tuesday in Yerevan a memorandum of understanding to fight global climate changes and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
In 2002, Armenia became a signatory of the Kyoto Protocols, the main international document on fighting climate change. The treaty does not obligate Armenia to reduce its green house gas emissions, but it does allow Armenia to cooperate with other countries as part of the Clean Development Mechanisms project, designed to help nations ensure sustainable economic development.
According to Vidal, one of the UNDP Armenia Office’s major directions is to help Armenia overcome the consequences of global climate change.
