The government of Armenia will send humanitarian assistance to Syria using the currently closed border crossing to Turkey at Margara.
The transport of humanitarian assistance, approved by the cabinet on Thursday, is scheduled to begin Friday and the border to Turkey will remain open until March 30.
The Armenian and Syrian governments had discussed the issue of providing humanitarian aid.
The last time the Armenian government used the border crossing to Turkey was in 2023 when humanitarian aid was sent to Turkey following the earthquake there.
The Margara border crossing has been closed since the early 1990s. The Armenian government announced earlier this month that renovation and construction of a checkpoint at the border has been completed as part of an agreement reached to normalize relations between Armenia and Turkey.
In 2022, Ankara and Yerevan decided to open their borders for ground travel by individuals from third countries and those holding diplomatic passports.
That agreement has yet to take effect, since Ankara continues to impose preconditions on the normalization process, saying that a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan must be signed, before the provisions of the 2022 agreement are enacted.
