YEREVAN (Armenpress)-At a recent news conference at the Rome City Council–it was announced that the Rome City Council unequivocally recognizes the Armenian Genocide. Armenia’s ambassador to Italy Gagik Baghdasarian–as well as a number of well-known representatives of the Italian human rights community shared their viewpoints regarding the importance of the recognition of the Armenian Genocide acknowledgment.
The Armenian ambassador called the council’s actions as ones of a huge moral value.
"The culprit is well-known–the Genocide was planned–organized and implemented by the government of the Young Turks–that is why the recognition of the Genocide by Turkey does not impose crime on the Turkish people. Genocide’s recognition is first and foremost important for the Turks themselves. We understand that it is not easy for the Turkish government to take this step even if there is a desire to do so after denying it for 85 years. But if Turkey wants to become a member of European Union it must do this," said the ambassador.
At the end of the news conference the ambassador thanked the Rome City Council officials for their moral stance on the Armenian Genocide.
