VAN–Asbarez reported yesterday that the Turkish Tourism Ministry had rejected Armenian American Victor Bedoyan’s permission to rename a recently purchased hotel on the shore of Lake Van "Vartan Hotel." Bedoyan has been residing in Van–Turkey for the past seven years with his wife–engaging in various business activities.
The Turkish objection to the renaming of the hotel is being justified by allegations that Bedoyan is pursuing other goals–as the new name of the hotel means "victory."
Istanbul-based "Marmara" Newspaper has reported that the June 6th issue of "Radikal," featured this story on its front page. The paper also noted that Bedoyan has spent close to $1 million on the formerly known Sirhan Hotel.
After his license was revoked–Bedoyan appealed to the American consulate in Adana. His next appeal will go to the European Human Rights Court. Bedoyan said he will continue to live in Van until the court issues a verdict.
The Turkish Tourism Ministry went so far as to order hotel guests to vacate the premises. "This paints an ugly image of Turkey and threatens the tourist industry in Van," said Bedoyan.
