BEIRUT-Members of the Lebanese parliament’s Armenian bloc met with Parliament Speaker Nabih Burri last Thursday to discuss issues of concern to Lebanese Armenia’s.
Bloc members Dr. Sebouh Hovnanian–who is also a member of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Central Committee of Lebanon–Khachig Babikian–Hagop Chakhoudarian and Apraham Dedeyan–stressed the importance of opening an Armenian Embassy in Beirut. Despite previous steps taken in that direction–an Armenian Embassy has yet to open–the delegation said. Burri promised to look into the matter.
The delegation also pointed out the importance of getting the Lebanese government to recognize the Armenian Genocide– reminding him that the community had worked closely with the previous leadership for official recognition. Burri was very receptive and pledged to introduce a Genocide resolution at the appropriate time.
During the meeting–Burri took the opportunity to point to the positive role the Armenian community has played during the war–as well as in the post-war reconstruction period.
