GLENDALE–After years of meticulous planning and the tireless and selfless efforts of scores of dedicated volunteers, donors and organizers, the Armenian Bone Marrow Donor Registry, is pleased to announce that it will host it’s inaugural telethon and launch its "Be An Angel, Save A Life" Campaign on Sunday, April 13th, 2008, from 4PM to 9PM PST to raise the necessary funds to realize the dreams of Armenia’s world-wide with the establishment and operation of a Stem Cell Harvesting Center in Yerevan.
Like many other ethnic minorities, Armenia’s have a unique genetic make up in terms of transplantation antigens, meaning that there is a much higher probability of finding a bone marrow match among other Armenia’s. Hence, due to the lack of compatible donors, it was nearly impossible to find suitable matches among the existing international registries. To address this imbalance, due to which, a great number of Armenian children and adults have already lost their lives, the Armenian Bone Marrow Donor Registry was founded by Dr. Frieda Jordan in 1999.
The ABMDR’s Stem Cell Harvest Center in Yerevan will be the first and only center of its kind in the Caucasian region and will play a vital role in the treatment of other diseases as well, such as many cancers, diabetes, and heart ailmen’s. Like the Registry itself, the Center will be internationally accredited, opening new doors for global collaborations in medicine and scientific research.
The Armenian Bone Marrow Donor Registry is an independent, non-governmental, not-for-profit 501(C)(3) organization, whose mission is to ensure that every ethnic Armenian struck with a life threatening blood-related illness is able to find hope for long-term survival through the identification of genetically suitable bone marrow match.
