YEREVAN (Armenpress)–After wrapping up his official visit to Syria–Armenian Defense Minister and Secretary of the National Security Council Serge Sarkisian arrived in Lebanon on August 28.
The Armenian foreign ministry said that the minister was welcomed by Lebanon’s Defense Minister Khalil Herawi–Minister of Sport and Youth issues Sebouh Hovnanian–high ranking military officials–Armenian deputies of Lebanon’s parliament–and representatives from Armenian church.
On his way to Beirut–Sarkisian made a short stop at Anjar–a village populated by Armenia’s–where he placed a wreath on the monument devoted to the heroes who fought against Turks in 1919 in Musa Dagh.
In Beirut–Sarkisian held talks with Khalil Herawi and the chief of general staff Michel Suleyman–and they signed an agreement on military technical cooperation between Armenia and Lebanon.
The same day–the President of Lebanon General Emile Lahoud welcomed Sarkisian–who presented Lahoud with a message from President Robert Kocharian. Sarkisian also met with the Chairman of Lebanon’s Parliament Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and discussed Armenian-Lebanese relations and regional issues.
Sarkisian also met with the Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia Aram I during his official visit. According to the Great House press service–His Holiness Aram I underlined the importance of Diaspora’s participation in the development of Armenia–and he emphasized the necessity of contributions to the Armenian army. He also emphasized the Great House’s complete support for Armenia and Karabakh.
Armenia’s Ambassador to Lebanon Arman Navasardian was present at the meeting also.
Sarkisian and the Armenian delegation had an opportunity to get acquainted with the different departmen’s of the Great House of Cilicia.
On the second day of his visit to Lebanon–Sarkisian met with the Catholicos of Great House of Cilicia Aram I–patriarch Hovhannes Peter IX–and the chairman of Armenian churches in Middle East Mkrtich Karagyozian.
