YEREVAN (A1+)The Armenian representation to the Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe did not attend meeting of the Karabakh subcommittee Tuesday, saying that the outcome of the meeting would not be fruitful. Parliament Speaker and head of the Armenian delegation to PACE Tigran Torosyan told RFE/RL that during the last subcommittee meeting, which coincided with late Prime Minister Antranik Markarians funeral, the Azeri side took advantage of Armenia’s absence thwarted the successes achieved previously within the subcommittee. The meeting must be fruitful and provide tangible results. Senseless meeting are not beneficial to Armenia. We cannot participate in such gatherings and pretend they are beneficial, said Torosyan in explaining Armenia’s decision to not participate in the meeting. Torosyan explained that during the last PACE session, Azerbaijan had misled the subcommittee by introducing amendmen’s to the resolution pertaining to Azerbaijans commitmen’s to the peace process. This is proof that the Azeris cannot even be loyal to fundamental norms. They aren’t ready for any dialogue and cooperation on any issue either, emphasized Torosyan. Russell Johnston, chairman of the special committee on Nagorno Karabakh in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe said he was unaware of the reasons for the Armenian delegation’s absence. I had a 10-minute meeting with the Azeri delegation. They support my initiative to visit the region. The Armenian delegation also agrees to it. I shall visit Baku, Yerevan and Stepanakert, said Johnston. The Azeri Trend agency reported that Johnston qualified the absence of the Armenian delegation as a frivolous step. To this, Torosyan responded: I think that the chairman of the sub-committee must be aware of the reasons as we had informed the secretary of the sub-committee. It is upon them to find out why the secretary hadn’t informed Russell Johnston about our decision.
